We booked the Muskrat Meadows campground on Deas Island for an overnight camp. We hiked ~5km around the island including a stop to peak into the Massey Tunnel where it goes under the Fraser River. We practiced outdoor safety skills including knife work, Scouter Jonathan and the Howlers made us a delicious dinner, and we screened stop-motion movies that the Cubs had prepared.
The Cubs were joined by Beavers and Scouts at this huge Scouts Canada Property. We had two special guests that taught us archery and First Nations cedar crafts. We we had a traditional campfire with skits, songs and reflection.
The Cubs hiked about 9km total around the Golden Ears easy canyon, visiting the lower falls and the east-west connector bridge.
The Cubs conquered their fears (and tested their endurance) at indoor rock climbing led by some awesome instructors.
The Cubs enjoyed an overnight camp at Raven's Nest campground in Tynehead Park. We were lucky to be there on a day that the salmon hatchery was releasing salmon.
The Cubs presented their plant research posters and participated in activities from many environmentally-focused groups on Earth Day.
The Cubs planned, prepared and hosted a carnival with many games, activities and experiences for the Beavers and their families.
The Cubs hiked the Hollyburn Cabin Trail and found the Scouts Cabin, which is currently closed. It was a nice, snowy hike on a quiet trail.
The Cubs focused on keeping warm because it was below zero at night. Fortunately we had a big campfire and had spent a few weeks preparing our cold weather gear.
The Cubs tried out canoes and kayaks on Deer lake on a perfect sunny day. It turns out we have some Cubs who are part of a boating club that race kayaks. The staff at Deer Lake boat rentals were awesome!
We bussed out to the Scouts-owned Camp McLean in Langley for a fun-packed day. The Scouter Sol taught us some archery basics and we managed to roast hot dogs without a real campfire.
Scouter Sol brought his mountaineering equipment up to Cypress Resort with the Cubs. We probed the snow depth, practiced digging snow caves, and secured tie-downs in the ice and snow.
